The City of South Bend and Downtown South Bend (DTSB) were planning a year-long celebration to commemorate South Bend’s 150th Birthday, with special community festivities starting Friday, May 22 (its actual birthdate) and continuing over the Memorial Day weekend. One of the organizers’ goals for the year-long sesquicentennial celebration was to provide opportunities for all residents to create better connections to the South Bend community for themselves, their families, and their organizations, while fostering forms of expression that would be artistic, and service-and-community-oriented.
